- The analysis and coding scheme has been developed by the authors solely for the purpose of scholarly academic research into the economics of scientific fraud. The coding of each individual retraction is based on a range of public information sources including the information that (in some cases) is provided in the retraction. Beyond public sources, no additional information has been gathered from the authors of the retracted papers or others involved in the cases. As such the coding represents an informed judgment regarding the nature of the underlying scientific mistake not the outcome of a formal investigation. The data is part of an ongoing project and will be updated as the research continues.
